Felt Roofing across London

Felt roofing, also called built-up bitumen roofing, uses layers of polyester-reinforced bitumen membrane. The layers are bonded together, usually by torch-on application, to build a durable waterproof covering with a mineral-finished cap sheet for UV resistance.

It is a cost-effective choice for garages, extensions, porches and small commercial roofs, and many roofers know it well, so repairs are easy to carry out down the line.

  • Lower cost than many other flat roof systems
  • A multi-layer system with built-in redundancy
  • A proven track record in the UK
  • Easy to repair in the future
  • Wide choice of cap sheets and finishes

How we install felt roofs

We prepare the deck, lay a vapour control layer and insulation where specified, then apply the base, intermediate and cap sheets with correct laps and detailing at upstands and edges. Torch-on work is carried out safely by trained roofers following hot-works precautions. We can also use cold-applied and self-adhesive systems where hot work is not suitable.

Good edges and drips make a significant difference to the life of a felt roof, so we use proper trims and flashings, and we make sure outlets are clear and properly sealed.

How it works

Felt compared with GRP and EPDM

Felt has a lower upfront price and a shorter average life, typically in the range of 15 to 25 years for high-performance systems. GRP and EPDM typically cost more but often last longer. We help you weigh the options for your budget.

What affects the cost?

Felt roofing cost depends on the area, deck condition, number of layers, insulation and detailing. We provide a written quote after a free survey.

Felt Roofing FAQs

How long does a felt roof last?

High-performance multi-layer systems commonly last 15 to 25 years when installed and maintained properly.

Is torch-on felt safe?

When done by trained roofers following hot-works safety procedures it is safe. We also offer torch-free systems where appropriate.

Can you felt over an old felt roof?

Sometimes, but usually we strip back and inspect the deck for damp and rot first to avoid trapping moisture.

Does felt need maintenance?

Occasional checks and clearing debris and gutters help it last. Small repairs are easy to carry out.
