Slate Roofing across London
Slate has covered London roofs since the Georgian era. A well-laid natural slate roof can last a century or more, but slates fail when nails corrode, when they slip out of place or when they delaminate in the wrong conditions. A good repair replaces the fixing, not just the slate.
We repair, restore and replace slate roofs on houses, mansion blocks, churches and commercial buildings, and we lay new slate roofs on extensions and conversions, working in Welsh, Spanish and fibre-cement slate depending on the building and budget.

Signs of slate roof problems
- Slipped or missing slates, often from nail fatigue
- Slates that are flaking, cracked or delaminating
- Broken slates and lead flashings visible from the ground or in the loft
- Moss or staining in the valleys and along the gutter line
- Slate dust or fragments in gutters and downpipes

Send us a photo or describe the problem and we will tell you honestly what we think it is and what it needs. A free written quote follows any inspection.

Slate repairs and restoration
For isolated damage we replace slates with matching reclaimed or new slates and fix them with copper or stainless steel nails or with slate hooks and clips, which can be used without disturbing surrounding slates. Larger areas of slipped slates may point to failed nails across the slope, so we assess how far the problem spreads.
Full re-slating uses salvaged slate where possible, with new battens, membrane and lead details. This preserves the character of period property and often costs less than buying everything new. If your building is in a conservation area, we help you meet the planning requirements.
How it works
Assess
We inspect slate condition, fixings and lead work and explain what is salvageable.
Plan
We agree reclaimed or new slate, matching size, colour and laying pattern.
Restore
Slates are stripped and re-laid or replaced with proper fixings and details.
Finish
Lead, ridge and verge details completed and the roof checked.

Natural slate or fibre cement
Natural slate offers the best life, appearance and value over decades. Fibre-cement and manufactured slates are lighter and cheaper, and suit some new builds and extensions. For period roofs and conservation areas, natural slate is generally right. We will always give you the options.
What affects the cost?
Slate costs depend on the quality and origin of the slate, the roof area and complexity, scaffold, and how much can be salvaged. We provide a written quote after a free survey.

Slate Roofing FAQs
How long does a slate roof last?
Natural slate itself often lasts 75 to 100 years or more. The nails, lead and battens may need work sooner, which is why repairs and restoration are common.
Can you repair a few slipped slates?
Yes. We replace individual slates and fix them securely. If many are slipping, we check whether the fixings along the slope are failing.
Do you use reclaimed slate?
Where it suits the roof, yes. Reclaimed slate keeps the character of a period building and is a more sustainable option.
Do you work in conservation areas?
Yes. We know the likely requirements and help ensure materials and details are appropriate.
